What Is Number Porting?

Number porting is the process of moving your existing phone number from your current carrier to Ringo. This allows you to keep your same number while using Ringo’s calling and messaging services. Nothing changes for your customers, they continue contacting you through the same number as before.

Supported Number Types

Ringo supports porting for most North American phone numbers:

  • U.S. local numbers – All states are eligible

  • Canadian local numbers – All provinces are supported

Cost Information

  • Ringo fees: There is no charge for porting your number in or out of Ringo.

  • Carrier fees: Your current provider may apply a port-out fee depending on their policies.

What to Expect During the Timeline

  • Processing time: Once you submit all required information, porting typically lasts from 5 to 15 days for standard ports, but it can take up to 4 weeks or longer barring rejections from your current service provider.

  • Service continuity: Your number will continue to work with your current carrier until the official port date, no downtime.

  • Activation: Calling will be available immediately after the port. SMS routing may take up to 48 hours to fully stabilize.

How Does the Porting Process Work with Ringo?

Porting your number to Ringo involves a few simple steps. Here is what to expect:

Step 1 — Send Us Your Porting Request

To begin, email us with the required information to request a carrier transfer.

All details must match exactly as they appear on your current carrier’s billing statement. This helps ensure that the porting request is approved without delays.

Required Information

  • The phone number you wish to port

  • Your current carrier’s name

  • Your first and last name

  • Your billing address

  • A copy of a recent bill with the carrier (dated within the last 30 days)

  • Your signature (authorizing the port)

Each carrier has its own requirements and procedures for porting phone numbers. Some may require a port-out PIN. Depending on your current provider, additional information or specific steps may be needed to complete the port. Once we identify your carrier, we’ll let you know exactly what is required and guide you through any extra steps.

With this information, we will create an LOA (Letter of Authorization) to formally authorize Ringo and our carrier partners to request the transfer of your phone number from your current provider.

Step 2 — Ringo Submits the Porting Request

After receiving your information, we will submit the official porting request to your current carrier.

Your carrier will then review the request and determine the porting date.

This usually takes between 1-2 weeks, but it could take longer if there are any issues with the information provided.

Step 3 — Receive Confirmation of Your Port Date

Once your carrier confirms the date, we will email you of the scheduled porting date. You do not need to take any action during this stage unless we request additional information. If you want to check the status of the porting you can email us here.

Step 4 — Number Successfully Ports to Ringo

On your confirmed port date:

  • Your phone number will transfer from your old carrier to Ringo

  • Your number becomes active and available inside your Ringo account

  • You can begin using it immediately for calling and messaging

After Porting: Cancel Your Old Service

Once your number has successfully ported, contact your previous carrier to confirm that your old plan is canceled.

Some carriers close accounts automatically after a port, while others require manual cancellation, so it’s important to check.

💡 Don’t cancel your current service until the port is complete. Canceling early risks losing your number permanently.
